I am a Feminist

I'm a feminist
But I believe that men are strong
I'm a feminist
But I believe that a man can do a 'woman's' job
I'm a feminist
But I believe that a man can bring up a child
I'm a feminist
But I believe that a man has the right to cry
I'm a feminist
But I believe that men can be leaders
I'm a feminist
But I believe that men can can have fears
I'm a feminist
But I believe that there's more to a man than his body
I'm a feminist
But I believe that men have the right to an opinion
I'm a feminist
Because I believe that a man is the equal of a woman
I'm a feminist
I'm an equal
I'm a woman
You can be a feminist
Because you're an equal
You don't have to be a woman

Define: Perfection

This society, in this day and age
makes it difficult for people to start a new page.

Inflicting judgements upon peoples lives,
leading them to believe a bunch of lies.

Because apparently there’s this concept of perfection
causing society to flea from this thing called ‘imperfection’.

But who has the right to define one from the other?

Not me, not you, nor your father or your mother.

What if we looked at our ‘faults’ with love,
and stopped to realise they’re something we love,
because the most powerful thing in the world is love,
and then we could look at our reflections and be filled with LOVE.

To love oneself isn’t to be arrogant or conceited,
in fact it stands to show society has been defeated.

Because to love yourself is strong and powerful
and may be the key to being successful.

So next time you look at yourself in a reflection,

stop.

... and realise YOU'RE the definition of perfection.

My Greatest Fear is the Reality of 27 Million.

In amongst exams and the excitement and stress of this season, I thought I would take a moment to write about something that I am very passionate about.

I am passionate about seeing the end to Human Trafficking.

For those of you who aren't aware of what Human Trafficking is I'll explain. Human Trafficking is modern day slavery and is the fastest growing crime in the world. It is the illegal trade of human beings, mainly for the purposes of forced labor and sex trafficking. It affects every nation across the globe and every 30 seconds, someone becomes a victim of modern day slavery.

Many of you I'm sure are shocked by that.

'Can there really be slavery today?' The answer I'm afraid is yes.

'Surely there can't be that many victims?' You may well ask but unfortunately the truthful response to that is shocking. There are MORE slaves in the world today than at any other point in human history. There are estimates of there being over 27 million victims across the globe. Men, Women and children are being exploited for manual and sexual labor against their will.

On the one hand I don't want to scare you, but on the other hand you need to understand the seriousness of Human Trafficking. Human Trafficking can happen to anyone, anywhere at anytime.

In my mind I thought Human Trafficking was a distant thing and something that only happened in Thailand and America, however after having researched into the facts more leading up to my photography exam (Which was based on Human Trafficking) I discovered how blind I had been. Little did I know, Human Trafficking was a crime active in the city I live. I learnt that child trafficking has been discovered in my city a couple of times where children have been trafficking from places abroad and brought to England to work as prostitutes. I learnt that a couple of years ago it was discovered that traffickers were holding open auctions in and outside of the big airports in England. I discovered that occasionally when people have been invited for job interviews or offered jobs after finding applications online, they have attended with their passports and unknowingly fallen into the hands of traffickers. I learnt that social media has been a key for Human Traffickers to find out all the information about certain people or children who post/parents post their lives onto social media and subsequently the traffickers are already trading people before they even have them in their grasp.

Many of the victims of Human Trafficking will suffer from verbal, physical and drug abuse. Very few are ever rescued.

  • The average age of a victim is 12 years old.
  • 1-2% of victims are rescued.
  • Approximately 75-80% of Human Trafficking is for sex.
  • There are an estimated 27 million adults and 13 million children currently victims.
  • An estimated 30,000 victims die each year due to abuse.
  • A human trafficker can earn 20 times what he paid for a girl.
  • It is estimated 80% of victims are female and 50% are children.
  • If a sex slave is arrested she is imprisoned whilst her trafficker is able to buy themselves out of trouble.
  • Airports are often used by traffickers to hold 'slave auctions' where women and children are sold into prostitution.
  • Human traffickers often work with corrupt government officials to obtain travel documents and seize passports.
  • In China and North Korea if a victim objects they are thrown into a gulag (Concentration Camp) or executed.

Those are only a few of the heart breaking facts of human trafficking but there are many more and I'll leave all links below.

The A21 Campaign posted a video telling the story of a Victim - A Victim's Story
They also posted a video showing that Human Trafficking can happen to anyone - In Her Shoes

The reason I wrote this blog post isn't just to make you aware but also to tell you that YOU can do so much to help put an end to Human Trafficking.

There are many organisations around that you can donate money to:
Human Trafficking Foundation: http://www.humantraffickingfoundation.org

On those sites are more ways you can be involved such as writing letters, holding awareness meetings, just simply telling a friend. Whatever you have the ability to do to help, I URGE you to do it.

We CAN put an end to human trafficking, but we need YOUR help.

A Well Overdue Post

I'M BACK!!!

I have no idea how long ago it was since I last posted but I thought it was about time I got back to blogging. I've been very busy with being an A Level student and so my subjects have been my main focus. So I thought that for todays post I would post whats been crackalakin in my life!

1) I've come to finally LOVE photography (as in the subject) as I have found that the dark room is basically my best friend and during year 13 so far, I have been able to take photos of things I am passionate about!

My friend and I decided to be creative with the Red light in the dark room and then we broke it after a few good shots... oopsyyy

I purchased this necklace off A21.ORG which is an organisation who make it their aim to abolish human trafficking in the 21st Century.

Just before christmas I went down to London with my English Lit chums and it was a perfect photo opportunity for some of these posers aha

For my photography coursework I based my project upon Ibsen's character Nora Helmer

My photography response to Lynn Hershman Leeson's photography

2) I've been in my school production of The Threepenny Opera where I played the role of Mrs Peachum and a Hooker (attractive I know). It was so much fun and I really enjoyed it despite how ridiculous I looked!

3) I have been cast in Shared Experience's production of Mermaid which will be touring professionally to my local Theatre. I am so unbelievably excited about this opportunity and I can't wait for the shows to begin.

4) I had my audition for Drama School. In short I fell in love with one particular course at a drama school and applied for only that course and my audition was the other day and although it's unlikely i'll get a place this year because of my age the audition was one of the most enjoyable things I have ever done and I felt 100% at home there meaning whatever happens, I will definitely not give up on my dreams of going there.

5) I have been to see many a play recently. This past week I have seen 3 of the best plays I've seen. On Saturday I had the privilege of being able to do some workshops and hang out with Nonsuch Theatre Company and they let me sit in on their tech rehearsal for their production of Acqua Alta, it was such a brilliant experience for me due to the fact that in the future I would like to be doing what their theatre company is doing. When I went down to London for my audition I saw The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime, which was INCREDIBLE and then last night I saw POSH (The film 'The Riot Club' is based upon this play) and honestly that production blew me away, it made me feel uncomfortable and disturbed but in a good way and I would probably go as far as saying that that production was my favourite to have been performed at that theatre.

6) I started a Directing course for young directors at my local theatre and this opportunity has taught me so much already and I absolutely love it!

7) My Church in Nottingham is just incredible and I feel so blessed to be a part of it and a part of their youth.

8) I CREATED A YOUTUBE CHANNEL (which I appear to be struggling to upload to due to the issue I seem to be having of my camera having more storage than my laptop... #bloggerproblems)

So there are 8 things that have been crackalakin in my life recently! Hope you have enjoyed this post, and if there is anything you would like me to blog about make sure you comment or tweet me (@joannawalton13) and let me know and I'll try and get it done. Also video suggestions would be a blessing because I don't know what to film ahah.

I hope you are all having a fantastic week and I promise to get better at this!!!

Big Love

Peace Out x

The Stage

The Stage is a beautiful place. Some stages are big, some are small, some have fancy lighting, some have no lights, some are raised, some are just on the floor, yet each and every one of them is still a stage. But I find the stage a fascinating place as it is the home of performances. Every performance takes place on a stage. The stage is a safe place for a performance. I like Shakespeares quote of "all the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players." and Oscar Wilde's version "The world is a stage but the play is badly cast". I like that there is character put into the stage, and the importance of the stage. Without a stage the performers have nowhere to perform. The stage is necessary, it is a beautiful and significant part of theatre.

The Kite Runner

The Kite Runner

Last year for my AS English Literature, I studied Khaled Hosseini's The Kite Runner. The book itself is fascinating and tells the story of Amir Agha's life and how he became who he is in such a beautiful way. So this summer when I found out the production of it would be coming to Nottingham Playhouse I booked my tickets and went to see it. I was unsure of what to expect and worried I wouldn't enjoy it as much because I had to analyse the life out of it in English. But I can honestly say it is by far the best performance I have seen at Nottingham's Playhouse (and believe me I have seen many amazing plays there).  Andrei Costin as Hassan and Ben Turner as Amir were incredible. Their characterisation was so beautiful as they highlighted every detail mentioned about both characters in the book. Andrei Costin's performance as Hassan was truly captivating, he captured Hassan's personality and character perfectly, making him so innocent and enticing the audience into being able to feel nothing other than love and compassion for him.

The staging was incredible, and the kites they used really set the scene and made it all become so real. I am so glad I had the chance to go and see The Kite Runner for myself and if it is touring anywhere near you then don't hesitate to go and see it as it is a truly powerful performance that is quite thought provoking.
